Coach of the Year
Thumbs up to Seymour native Teri Moren who earned her second Big Ten Conference Women’s Basketball Coach of Year honor. Her first came in 2015-16. The winner is selected by the Big Ten media association and conference coaches. Moren, 53, led the Hoosiers to a 26-2 overall record, a 16-2 conference record, an outright Big Ten title, a No. 2 ranking The Associated Press Poll and a No. 1 seed in the conference — all program firsts.
Medora milestone
Thumbs up to Medora High School senior basketball player Shepard Earl who scored his 1,000th career point against Columbus Christian on Feb. 14.
Academic all-stars
Thumbs up to the Seymour High School bowling team members who recently earned academic all-state honors. They are Alex Sturgill, Carter Murphy, Chase Burke, Dillan Cooper, Erika Corya, Haley Anderson, Joey Larison and Wyatt McKinney.
State finalist
Thumbs up to Seymour High School senior Marlo Cornn who recently represented Jackson County in the Indiana Distinguished Young Women competition in Kokomo. Cornn, the daughter of Bret and Holly Cornn, was named one of the top 10 finalists and won the talent portion of the competition. She won $5,800 from the Jackson County DYW competition last summer and added another $1,200 to the total from the state contest.
Youth of the Month
Thumbs up to the three Brownstown Central High School seniors who recently were recognized as Youth of the Month by the Brownstown Exchange Club. The honorees and the months for which they recognized were Madeline Gibson, December; Jaren Cunningham, January; and Maddy Hackman, February.
Special recognition
Thumbs up to Seymour Middle School Sixth Grade Center’s Team 3113S which earned the Judges Award during a robotics tournament Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran School in Seymour. Members of the team are Connor Wilson, Lillian Westmoreland and Noble Hare.
Call for a celebration
Thumbs up to Seymour resident Billie Mae Wintin who will be 90 on March 11. The family is planning an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. that day at First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Third St., Seymour.
Dancing the night away
Thumbs up to all of the dads, stepdads, grandpas, brothers, uncles, guardians and other important male figures who took their special girl or girls to the annual Father Daughter Dance at Girls Inc. of Jackson County in Seymour. The dance, first held Feb. 25, 1984, is always a special night for everyone. This year’s dance, the first since 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, was attended by more than 500 people.
Take time to stop
Thumbs down to motorists who hit another vehicle and then leave the scene before police can arrive to take a report. Those events just make insurance rates higher for the rest of us who take responsibility for our actions.
