The Owen-Salt Creek Township Fire Department recently took delivery of a 2023 Kenworth tanker-pumper. Shown with the truck are, from left, Fire Chief Chad Laney, Zach Sovern, who is the Owen-Salt Creek Fire District fiscal officer, and Steve Wray, who is the fire district board’s president. The $450,000 firefighting apparatus can hold 3,500 gallons of water and pump at a rate of 500 gallons per minute for the department, which protects property in Owen and Salt Creek townships in western Jackson County. The district is the largest fire territory — over 97 square miles — in the county and covers an area from south of U.S. 50 north to the Brown County line with Jackson County.
