Special Olympics basketball players compete in Shelbyville

SHELBYVILLE — Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County’s basketball players competed in the Arnie Petre Tradition Tournament on Saturday at Shelbyville High School.

The Tornadoes men’s five-on-five team went 2-0 with a 30-22 win over the Monroe County Raptors and a 38-20 win over the Hancock County Heat.

In the first game, A.J. Engel led with 12 points, followed by Thomas Emly with eight, Darrell Stevens with six, Tim Ashburn with two and Josh Beals with two. The referees awarded Engel with a sportsmanship award after the game.

Against the Heat, all eight Tornadoes players scored, led by Stevens with eight. He was followed by Emly with six, Todd Smith with six, Ashburn with six, Beals with four, James Knight with four, Derrick Martin with two and Engel with two. Beals got the sportsmanship award for this game.

The Tornadoes are now 4-3 on the season.

The Hurricanes women’s three-on-three team only had one game and lost 18-12 to the Decatur County Cheetahs. Amanda Hamm scored eight points, and Averie Brennan scored four. They are 2-4 on the season.

The Cyclones men’s three-on-three team lost to the ROD Chargers 21-12 and defeated the Wayne County Patriots 20-2.

Dale Hickman led with eight points in the first game and 16 in the second, and Rob Smith and Donald Bennethum each had two in the first game. Hickman received a sportsmanship award after the first game. They are 3-5 on the season.

Also Saturday, Owen Law competed in the individual skills competition and placed first.

The men’s teams and skills are off until the sectional March 18 at Hauser High School in Hope, and the women’s team next has the state tournament the first weekend of April at the Pacers Athletic Center in Westfield.
