BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Police Department recently welcomed new officer Skylar Thompson.

He was sworn in during the Jan. 17 Brownstown Town Council meeting.

Thompson, 28, is originally from Brownstown and graduated from Brownstown Central High School in 2013. He said he always liked helping people, and for as long as he can remember, he has always wanted to be a police officer.

Thompson has been in law enforcement for five years and has been a member of the U.S. Army Reserve for seven years. In his free time, he likes hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his family.

Before moving to Brownstown, Thompson, his wife, Cami, and their daughter, Ibrianna, lived in Scott County, where Thompson worked for the Scott County Sheriff’s Office as an officer for three and a half years.

Thompson said to be a good police officer, one needs to have sound judgment, good communication, interpersonal skills, problem-solving skills and a strong moral character.

Some of Thompson’s duties as a police officer include patrolling, answering calls, public interaction and being a positive role model in the community.

“I plan to help and give back to the community,” he said. “I want the community to know that I will always be there when they need me and that they will always be able to rely on the police when they need help.”

Thompson has learned through experience in high-stress situations to remain calm and stay focused. He always looks for positive outcomes and tries not to get in a hurry, no matter how stressful something may get.

“I will always be there to serve the community when called upon and show the level of professionalism that Brownstown Police Department has established,” Thompson said.

Brownstown Police Department Chief Tom Hanner said Thompson has been a great addition to the team and has received positive feedback from the community.

“We all see each other as family here, and it’s nice having him back in town,” Hanner said. “A lot of people remember him from when he played basketball, so they love seeing him patrol around town.”

Thompson said his favorite part of being a police officer is helping people in the community and being a role model for the younger generations.

Thompson said for anyone interested in following a career in law enforcement to never give up on their hopes and dreams.

“It took a lot of hard work to get where I am as a person today, but as long as you stay focused, anything is possible,” he said.
