Being in the coffee business has its perks: Coffee Company drive-thru picking up steam

Logan Mead said what he enjoys most about owning Coffee Company is getting to interact with people in the community and providing good drinks for people who enjoy their daily coffee.

The Seymour resident was 24 when he started Coffee Company as an online store in the summer of 2020.

Mead had been shopping for coffee at the grocery store one day and had an epiphany. He wanted to try different coffees without having to buy an entire box of a flavor he might not like. He thought others might like it, too, so he started his own coffee business.

Since 2020, Coffee Company has expanded and grown considerably.

“It seems the past three years have gone by really fast,” Mead said. “From the time I wake up to the time I go to bed, I’m busy working on something.”

Besides managing his coffee business, he also works at Pepsi Beverages Co. in Seymour.

“We started out just taking online coffee orders and by word of mouth, where people I knew of local residents would order from me directly, and now, it has taken off to where it has been a couple of businesses and I supply 1852 Cafe with all of their coffee, and then back in October, we opened up the drive-thru location,” he said.

As to how the Coffee Company and 1852 Cafe collaboration came about, Mead said Bri Roll, executive director of Seymour Main Street, had recommended him to the cafe owners, Jason and Stacy Harmon, and they reached out to him when they were first starting up their business in 2021.

Mead said having a drive-thru coffee shop had always been in the back of his mind, and it came down to finding the right location and the right people at the right time.

“When I saw the building we’re currently in was up for rental, I thought we’d try it,” he said of the former Home Federal Bank drive-thru building at 220 W. Second St. “We’re in a good spot and things are going well, and we’re just continuously picking up steam for the business.”

He said they finally got the sign for the shop about a week ago, so that has been put up by the entrance, and the menu for the shop is just about solidified, so they’re getting to be pretty set in place.

“1852 Cafe was helping me staff for a little bit, and currently, me and my mother (Stacy Mead) have been working here, and there are a couple other people trying to help staff it,” Mead said. “Jason (Harmon) has been working a couple days and my mom a couple days, then I work there on the weekend.”

He said right now at the drive-thru, they just serve drinks, such as espressos, which are your typical lattes, Americanos and macchiatos, and then there are slightly cheaper options of drip-brewed coffee and K-cups in the smaller 12-ounce drinks.

“Having K-cup drinks at the shop can introduce people to the products I sell on the website so they can get a taste of the K-cups and get directed to the website, where they can try different coffees to see what they like and what they don’t like,” Mead said.

Customers have an option on the website where they can choose to have their bagged coffee or K-cups mailed to them or they can pick up their orders at the shop, so they can also get a drink on the way home or on the way to work. It works out best for everyone to have a central location, he said.

“We recently added the Oreo frappe to the menu and the peppermint Oreo frappe, which are just incredible, but I’m the type of person who likes the classic drinks, so I usually have an American or a latte,” Mead said. “The coffee beans are good just by themselves and don’t really need a flavor, so I’m perfectly happy just drinking a plain Americano, which is espresso and hot water.”

The Coffee Company drive-thru also offers a variety of sugar-free syrups for those who are calorie conscious or don’t want the extra sugar.

“Coming up, there will be more items added to the menu, and around springtime or summer, the plan is to offer some Italian ice or ice cream,” Mead said. “We also hope to get some tables to allow people to sit down and hang out for a while when the weather’s nice.”

Coffee Company drive-thru hours are 7 to 10 a.m. and noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and closed on Sunday.
