January Braves of the Month announced

BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Central Community School Corp. board of school trustees recognized the January Student of the Month award winners during a meeting Tuesday night at the elementary school.

The three honorees were first-grader Camden Vague, sixth-grader Gabriella Hall and junior Cody Burnside.

Brownstown Elementary School Principal Marty Young said Vague was selected Little Brave of the Month for his math skills.

His teacher, Tonya Fee, wrote in her nomination letter that she was excited to brag on Vague.

“Camden loves math as much as I do,” she said. “He has a math brain. He can see math in his head and is able to do math skills beyond first grade. On our first day back from break, he mentioned it was the 90th day of school, and he shouts out, ‘We are halfway there.’ He will be a rock star in second grade.“

She wrote that she loves having Vague in her classroom, and the school is lucky to have him because he is awesome and makes a difference in the world.

Young agreed and said Vague is a pleasure to have in the school.

“He always has a smile every time I see him, and he is a good friend to classmates and others,” Young said. “He always wants to learn more, and I enjoy talking to him about his cows and life on the farm. He’s a joy to be around and makes our school a better place.”

Brownstown Central High School Principal Joe Sheffer read the nomination letter for Burnside.

“It is without reservation that the BCHS agriculture department recommends Cody Burnside for the Student of the Month award,” Sheffer said.

He said the school’s ag teacher, Blake Hackman, said Burnside is a chapter officer for FFA, is conscientious of his duties and adds a different insight into the office.

Hackman said Burnside is extremely helpful to him and assists in many of the activities and ventures in which the FFA is involved.

“Finally, he teaches Mr. Hackman something new each week,” Sheffer said Hackman wrote. “He is up to date on all of the latest trends in agriculture and shares those ideas. … and oh, by the way, he is a great example of a fine young man.”

Brownstown Central Middle School Principal Doug McClure introduce Hall to the board and said she was nominated by the sixth grade teachers.

“Gabby is a joy to have in class, has a great work ethic and has a fabulous sense of humor,” McClure said of the teachers’ comments.

“She is dedicated to being the very best version of herself and puts effort into everything she does. Gabby goes beyond and is always eager to learn. Her participation in class shows her engagement and motivation and makes the most of out of her education.“

Hall has a noticeably pleasant disposition, and this quality makes her stand out in a crowd, the teachers said.

“She takes initiative in her learning and stays on top of all assignments when she is absent,” they wrote. “Her love for musicals is an added bonus, especially when she shares what she has learned through a musical of her own creation.”
