Recovery center expansion underway

A downtown Seymour clinic helping people deal with mental health issues or the symptoms of substance use recently began its fifth expansion project in just its fourth year of existence.

New Beginnings Recovery Center LLC is currently counseling about 450 patients with the youngest being 4 years old with those issues and also oversees around 70 patients in its intense outpatient program.

On Nov. 11, 2018, Teresea Higham opened the center in a 630-square-foot suite in the building that was the home of Bevers Family Pharmacy for decades. The need for addiction services has led to one expansion after another.

In September of this past year, New Beginnings occupied 3,500 square feet and 15 employees, including therapists and counselors. Most of their patients live in Jackson County and five surrounding counties. The Highams, who live in Columbus, vowed to never turn away anyone who comes in asking for help.

The newest expansion will include more room for group therapy sessions and an in-house medical staff with a psychiatric nurse practitioner.

Higham and her husband, Michael Higham, are currently filling positions for billing and administrative positions.

The constant growth of their clinic group therapy sessions has led to the need for more than the two therapy rooms they currently have available. The expansion will allow for more rooms open to group therapy sessions with at least 10 people per group.

Construction of the expansion to be located in a portion of the same building that most recently served as the home of Resource MFG is expected to be completed by January.

The Highams are excited for this new expansion to grow the clinic in their patient-centered environment.

“We are bringing something to the community that is more easily accessible,” Michael said.

The Highams, who have been married for 17 years, work together to help those who struggle with mental health and substance use through counseling and recovery coaching.

Their full mental health clinic specializes in treating mental health conditions that affect the symptoms of substance use.

The center offers an adult intensive treatment program that uses cognitive behavioral therapy to help process those challenging thoughts of mental health and substance use. The program provides those with education, positive coping skills, communication and many other skills.

The Highams are looking into partial hospitalization as their clinic continues to grow. This program also will include outpatient psychiatric services, where patients are able to receive treatment during the day and do not have to stay overnight.

The program offers sessions both in the morning and evening Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
