Auditions set for youth production of ‘Schoolhouse Rock Live!’

A pop culture phenomenon comes to the musical stage in “Schoolhouse Rock Live!”

The Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series that taught history, grammar, math and more through clever, tuneful songs is not only making a small-screen comeback, it’s lighting up stages everywhere, from school multipurpose rooms to university and regional theaters all around the country.

That includes Royal Off-the-Square Theatre in Brownstown.

Auditions for Jackson County Young Artists’ Theatre’s production of the show are set for 7 p.m. Sunday at Monday at the theater, 121 W. Walnut St.

Cast requirements are six leads ages 10 to 18. The lead role will sing baritone, while the supporting roles are two mezzos, two baritones and one alto. Additional characters will be added.

“Schoolhouse Rock Live!” follows Tom, a nerve-wracked schoolteacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music through such songs as “Just a Bill,” “Lolly, Lolly, Lolly” and “Conjunction Junction.”

For auditions, actors should prepare a song that is in the same style of the show and pick something fun that will show their character and acting skills. A Bluetooth speaker, YouTube and karaoke will be available.

Tech positions will need to be filled, too.

The show will be directed by Paul Keller and will be staged Jan. 27, 28 and 29.
