What’s the name of the book and author you are recommending?

“A Lady for a Duke” written by Alexis Hall.

What made you want to pick up this book in the first place?

A fellow librarian recommended it to me. It is a queer romance novel set in England 200 years ago. I was able to borrow the e-book (electronic version) through the Libby/OverDrive website that is connected to our library’s website.

Once you got into the book, what made you want to keep reading it?

The characters themselves are so interesting, even the side characters, that you are drawn in and want to get to know them all more and see where their stories are going.

Once you finished the book, what did you like about it?

It is such a wonderful love story that sadly would not have been allowed during the time she set the story in but still works in her book because of her excellent writing. It is a love conquers all/happily ever after type theme, which I am a sucker for.

What is the book about?

Viola Caroll is finally able to live freely as her true self after she was presumed dead at the Battle of Waterloo. But to get that, she had to give up her title, wealth, place in society and her best friend, Justin de Vere, the Duke of Gracewood. While she is still trying to adjust to her new life, she reconnects with Justin when she hears about how broken he has become without his dearest friend and she is determined to save him. But the more time they spend together, the more they recognize the connection between them is far deeper and stronger than either had realized before. Now, they must figure out if their love has a place in their friendship and their society.

Why would you recommend this book to others?

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a love story or historical romance novels with modern twists, similar to what we are seeing in adaptations like “Bridgerton,” “What Men Want” or the 1997 movie “Cinderella.“
