Joe was born on Thursday, September 26, 1974, in Salem, IN. He is the son of the late Jesse W. Mills and Judy (Lewis) Mills of Austin, IN. He was the baby of the family and the youngest of 3 sons. On October 21, 2000, at the Clark State Forest in Henryville, IN, Joe married Katie (Hall) Mills.

Joe had been the Procurement Manager for Sims Bark in Crothersville, IN since June 2019. He had been on board with the new plant in Crothersville since the beginning and helped open the plant. Earlier in life, he worked many years as a Production Manager at Total Concepts in Scottsburg, IN, as a General Foreman and Boilermaker at the Beacon Bechtel Trimble County Generating Station in Bedford, KY, and as a Boilermaker at the LG & E Plant.

He enjoyed attending and supporting the First Apostolic Church in Austin, IN where his uncle, JB Mills is the pastor.

He loved and supported the United States of America and took pride in decorating the Veteran’s graves during the holidays. He was devoted and shared his patriotism with his wife, daughters, and grandchildren by inviting them to join him as he displayed the importance of recognizing the Veterans by placing the flags properly in a uniform manner on their graves for the VFW when they needed assistance.

He was extremely proud of his daughter, Courtney, that has served and is still serving her country in the Airforce for the last 8 years and he was extremely proud of his daughter Maggie, who graduated from Purdue School of Engineering at IUPUI with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a Quality Engineer at Aisin in Seymour, IN.

He loved to doodle and designed his and Katie’s new forever home on the back of a napkin. He was a gun enthusiast that liked to research their history and learn about each individual gun. He was a barbecue connoisseur and could smoke the best barbecue around. His favorite color was green, he was a woodworker and enjoyed making wood crafts, camping, and buying all the camping gear and equipment that went along with it.

He was a talented musician that could sing, play the guitar, banjo, bass, and drums. He never met a stranger and could engage in conversation with anyone that he met.

He loved gathering and spending time with his family and friends. He always made sure that his mother was taken care of, and they enjoyed spending time together, going on outings, and out to eat. He had a special bond with his grandchildren and enjoyed handing out “Papaw’s special cookies” to them when they would ask, sometimes spoiling not just them but their dinner later by their overindulgence of cookies to his liking. His family has always been #1 in his life.

Joe was described by his family as a patriot who loved the US, the family pillar, a talker, giver, compassionate, loving, stubborn, and an amazing man that was the rock and foundation of their family and was the master of always smoothing things over.
