Trinity led 6-0 before match was paused with Austin

The Austin girls’ soccer team visited Trinity Lutheran for a match Monday evening.

Trinity was sailing along with a 6-0 lead when Austin’s Reygan Lewis was hit in the face by a kicked ball with 3:48 remaining in the half.

Lewis laid on the field until an ambulance came and took her to Schneck Medical Center.

The teams decided not to continue following the injury.

Trinity Lutheran head coach Thom Hayes said the officials said it was a “paused” game, and that the athletic directors from Trinity and Austin would be in contact to decide which course of action to take, whether to call it, continue it or to reschedule.

Hayes said he was pleased the way his team was dominating play as the Cougars had 29 shots to six for the Eagles.

The Cougars attempted six shots during the first nine minutes until Emma Myers scored the first of her four goals at the 30:32-mark.

“We started taking some shots that were probably not the greatest. We have historically handled this team well, so it kind of gives our shooters big eyes and I was trying to drill in their heads ‘let’s pass, let’s take good shots, and let’s score on a good percentage of them,’” Hayes said. “It took about 10 minutes to settle into that. They got it out of their system, shooting the ball or kicking it out-of-bounds, or right at the keeper.”

Myers scored her second goal at 16:15 before Austin finally attempted a shot with 13:55 on the clock.

Kaydence Miller scored Trinity’s third and fourth goals, before Myers added two more.

Myers had two assists, Miller had one assist and Bailey Reimer had an assist.

“I even pulled Kaydence out and showed her what I wanted to do when she got on the left side and she did,” Hayes said. “She scored two goals and had an assist by being patient and waiting for the right shot or the right pass.”

Hayes said this was a good bounce-back performance after falling to Oldenburg Academy Saturday.

“I knew we were going to handle (Austin) well. However, I was very happy the way we were passing the ball and playing as a team,” he said.

Trinity will travel to Jennings County Saturday for an 11 a.m. match.
