Thumbs up for March 18

To the rescue

While shopping at Walmart recently, I went through self-checkout and to my horror had forgotten my debit card. This wonderful young lady, an employee, came to my rescue and covered my purchase. What a wonderful experience that later reduced me to tears. Note: I did return later and “slip” $30 into her pocket. Thumbs up to her.

Freedom writers

Thumbs up to Gabby Cornn, the St. Ambrose Catholic School sixth-grader who recently won the Jackson County Sertoma Club’s annual What Freedom Means to Me essay contest. Cornn wrote that “Everyday freedom is taken for granted. I think anyone could be accused of this on any given day. Freedom is so much more than the average American knows.”

A related thumbs up to the 98 other Jackson County sixth-graders who entered the contest, including the runners-up, who were Gabbie Sarver from St. Ambrose Catholic School, Kinsey Reed from the Seymour Middle School Sixth Grade Center and Annabelle Mathena from Brownstown Central Middle School.

Near perfection

Thumbs up to McKenzie Wirtz of Seymour, who won the National Archery in the Schools Program’s state championship in archery on Saturday in Indianapolis. The Seymour High School senior shot a score of 299 out of 300. The head of NASP said he had never seen a score that high — even at the national level.

Committed to community

Thumbs up to those recognized for their commitment to the community during the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce’s annual dinner and awards program March 11 at Pewter Hall in Brownstown. They include Natasha Miller with Blue and Co., who received the Young Professional of the Year award; Zach Spicer with The Tribune, who received the Spirit of the Chamber award; and the three Teacher of the Year award winners, Bob Wood, elementary, Ellen Gentry, middle school, and Curt Schleibaum, high school. The other honorees were three businesses inducted into the chamber Business Hall of Fame, Automotive Equipment Specialist Inc. (small), Boys and Girls Club of Seymour (medium) and Jackson County REMC (large), and Buddy Fletcher, who was recognized as Committee Member of the Year.
