Three Owls earn HHC honors

The Hoosier Hills Conference released its all-conference honors on Monday, voted on by league head coaches, and Seymour had three individuals reap the rewards from their respective seasons.

Marcus Brooks was selected onto the 10-player All-Hoosiers Hills Conference first team.

Brooks averaged 10.1 points per game this season and led Seymour with 12 points in the sectional semifinal against Jeffersonville.

The senior played a vital role in helping the Owls finish with their best record (15-7) since the 2006-07 season. The 15 regular-season victories were Seymour’s best showing since the 1987-88 season.

“It’s been such a blessing and an honor to wear ‘Seymour’ across my chest these three years,” Brooks said after playing his final career game in sectionals. “The program is in good hands. The coaching staff is great, led by Coach Manns. This was a special season. There were more people in the stands, more enthusiasm. It didn’t end the way we wanted it to end, but that’s OK.”

Joining Brooks on the All-HHC first team was New Albany’s Tucker Biven, New Albany’s Josten Carter, Floyd Central’s Wes Celichowski, Bedford North Lawrence’s Colten Leach, Jeffersonville’s Will Lovings-Watts, Jennings County’s Keegan Manowitz, Floyd’s Brady Moore, Jeff’s Brandon Rayzer-Moore and Floyd’s Caleb Washington.

In addition to the first team, there were 10 more players named as honorable mention.

Seymour got two on the HHC honorable mention list, and those were Landon Fritsch and Eli Meyer. Fritsch scored 10.9 points per game for Seymour this year while Meyer averaged 8.9.

Fritsch’s highest scoring contest of the season was 25 points while Meyer had 17 in a game.

But offense wasn’t where Seymour made its mark for most of the season. The Owls had an impressive defense, one that held opponents under 30 points seven times in their last 13 games, including limiting Shelbyville to 18.

Meyer and Fritsch helped anchor that defense as two of the starters on the floor.

Joining Fritsch and Meyer on the All-HHC honorable mention list were Owen Law (JC), Carson McNulty (JC), Kyle Poates (FC), Will Rieckers (CE), Ben Sylva (CE), Colton Staggs (BNL), Kobe Stoudemire (Jeff) and Jacob Vogel (JC).
