Seymour man arrested for failing to register as a sex offender

A Seymour man was arrested Monday after Jackson County officers weren’t able to contact him about signing up for the sex offender registry, according to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer.

Dustin J. Jolly, 34, who faces a charge of failure to register as a sex offender, a Level 6 felony, was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:19 p.m. Monday. He remained in jail without bond Wednesday afternoon.

Meyer said Jolly is classified as an “offender against children” by the Indiana Department of Correction. Due to that status, Jolly is required by law to register once a year with the sheriff’s department that has jurisdiction over his residence.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Adam Nicholson, who oversees the sex offender registry in Jackson County, said Jolly last registered in January 2021.

Nicholson sends letters out to sex offenders one month prior to their registry. The letter says the offender needs to call and set up an appointment for their upcoming registry.

Jolly didn’t call or make any attempt to set up an appointment, police said.

Sex offenders also are required to provide their phone number so they can be contacted, and Nicholson said he tried on multiple occasions to contact Jolly by phone but did not receive a response.

Meyer said county officers then went to Jolly’s registered address but were unsuccessful in locating him.

On Monday, Jolly came to the sheriff’s department and was arrested on arrival.

“As I’ve said before, the sex offender registry is put in place for a good reason and should be taken seriously,” Meyer said.
