Brownstown improves to 16-3 with win over BNL

The Brownstown boys basketball got two wins in as many days on Friday night when the Braves capped of their back-to-back games with a 70-59 win over Bedford North Lawrence.

It was a game where Brownstown (16-3) led from start to finish.

They got off to a good start against the Stars (8-9) as Jack Benter nailed two 3-pointers in the first quarter to push the Braves lead out to 18-10.

“I thought at the start of the game we were really good,” head coach Dave Benter said.

Brownstown also dominated on the glass in the first half, out-rebounding Bedford 11-6, including a couple offensive put-backs from Aidan Schroer, Carson Darlage and Jakob Arthur.

Arthur’s first basket came from an offensive rebound, where he went back up with it, got fouled but converted the basket anyway and hit the ensuing free throw.

“I thought our post players were really good throughout the night,” Benter said.

Six Braves scored in the first half as Brownstown held a 33-24 advantage at halftime. Jack Benter led the team with 14 points, Darlage had six, Schroer four, Carter Waskom four, Arthur three and Levi Stahl two.

The Braves also went a perfect 11-11 from the charity stripe in the first half, taking advantage of Bedford’s eight team fouls.

Bedford refused to go away in this one, though. The Stars started the third quarter on a 7-2 run to get within six points and force Dave Benter to call timeout.

From that point on, it became a game of runs between the two teams. Brownstown would stretch its lead back out to double digits after Jack Benter converted a 3-point play and Waskom scored on a driving layup.

But the Stars continued to battle back, and it was a stretch that left coach Benter disappointed in his team.

“We had an eight minute stretch in the third and fourth quarters that were really bad,” Benter said. “Our focus and what we needed wasn’t there during that stretch.”

The Stars had two players in double digits that accounted for most of their points, and that was Colten Leach with 31 points and Colton Staggs scored 19.

Brownstown countered those two with Jack Benter dropping 28 points and Waskom, who only had four at halftime, ended with 17 overall.

“I didn’t think Carter early in the game was as focused but he finished really well for us,” coach Benter said.

Darlage scored 10 for the Braves, eight of those coming from the line. Arthur scored five, Schroer four, Stahl four and Parker Hehman two. The Braves shot 25-of-50 for 50 percent shooting and made 17-of-20 free throws.

Friday’s win came off the heels of a road win Brownstown picked up at the Hatchet House on Thursday night against Washington 71-49.

Brownstown will have three games next week that will mimic sort of a postseason schedule. The Braves will be at Floyd Central on Tuesday night, at Eastern (Pekin) on Friday night and home against Providence on Saturday night.

“To win a sectional, you’ll have to go drive an hour on Friday and then do it again on Saturday,” Benter said. “That’s good for us. It’s a reason we wanted to do that.”
