Trinity advances to sectional final with win over Crothersville

CAMPBELLSBURG — The Trinity Lutheran girls basketball team played a tough schedule all season, and when they wrapped up practice this past Saturday night, they talked about how they were prepared for the postseason this week.

That was evident right from the jump Monday night at the West Washington Sectional as Trinity came out and took care of business against Crothersville, defeating the Tigers 80-9.

“They just came out and took care of business,” head coach Mike Lang said. “I don’t have to do a whole lot when they go out there and do it all.”

This game was postponed two straight days last weekend due to weather, so the two teams finally squared off, and Trinity jumped out to a double-digit lead early on.

The Cougars had eight different players score in the first quarter as they took a 29-0 lead after one.

Kailene Cockerham hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter and put Trinity up 32-0.

Crothersville’s first bucket came with 6:40 left in the second quarter as Ella Plasse hit a driving layup. Plasse was consistently on the attack for the Tigers throughout the game.

Crothersville’s third and fourth points of the first half came from Kennadi Lakins, who returned from injury that she sustained in early December, but Lakins was on a minutes restriction.

She started the game but was subbed out rather quickly and came in toward the end of the first half, where she drove to the hoop and got fouled, making both free throws.

Trinity led 52-4 at halftime.

Bailey Tabeling led the Cougars with nine points at halftime, while Jordan Brewer provided eight points off the bench. Trinity had 11 different players score in the first half.

With an Emma Schepman basket early in the third quarter, it ensured that all 12 players on the Cougars’ sectional roster that suited up Monday scored a point in the game.

“It is nice because it keeps everyone engaged,” Lang said. “Every kid that went in and played tonight played hard. For 32 minutes, I thought every single one of our kids went out there and gave great effort.”

Lakins scored a floater in the lane to hit her first field goal of the game in the third frame, and Plasse nailed a 3-pointer at the end of the quarter for her fifth point.

Trinity took a 68-9 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars added 12 more points in the final quarter before the game went final.

Plasse led the Tigers with five points, while Lakins added four.

For Trinity, Jordan Brewer led the team with 14, while Tabeling scored 11 and Madison Keith had 10.

Tigers head coach Kevin Hensley said it was a tough season across the board with injuries and extenuating circumstances, but he’s proud of the way the Tigers finished it out.

“We’ve had such a tumultuous season with such high hopes, and it’s ending with five girls mentally strong enough to go out and represent our school with pride, four of which have never played competitive basketball let alone on the varsity level,” Hensley said. “I’m truly very proud of them. I admire these girls for their courage.”

As for Trinity, facing a back-to-back schedule this week, Monday was a solid opportunity to rest some starters.

“It’s huge. In my book, it’s huge,” Lang said. “We were getting worried we didn’t have our kids in there enough, especially our starters. We got them five to six minutes to start the third quarter just to get them out and running.”

Trinity will be playing in its seventh sectional final in the past 11 years. Six of those have come against West Washington, who played Shawe Memorial in the game that followed Trinity-Crothersville.

Results were not available at press time, but the Cougars will be taking on either Shawe Memorial or West Washington in the sectional finals tonight at 7 p.m.
