Cougars survive at Floyd

The Trinity girls basketball team went on the road for a big matchup against Floyd Central, and the Cougars came away with a 46-45 victory.

Trinity got off a slow start, scoring just two points in the first quarter and trailed 9-2.

The Highlanders remained in the lead heading into the final quarter as well, leading Trinity 30-29.

But Trinity was able to prevail in those final eight minutes to secure its one-point victory.

It was a big win for the Cougars, who won their second game in a row and improved their record to 13-6 overall on the season.

Trinity has three games left remaining on its schedule before the postseason arrives. The Cougars will be at home on Saturday against Jennings County for an afternoon game, and they will be at home again on Monday against Christian Academy for a night game.

The Cougars’ final game will be on Jan. 27, next Thursday, on the road at Madison.

The girls basketball sectional draw will take place this Sunday at 5 p.m., and sectional play will begin the first week of February.

Swimming and diving

Boys top East, girls tie

The Seymour boys and girls swimming and diving team swam at Columbus East on Thursday night and split the competition.

The Boys came away with a 93-87 win over the Olympians.

Paul Montgomery won the 50 free in 22.90, Pedro Cerino Rico won the 100 butterfly in 55.49, Montgomery won the 100 freestyle in 52.56 and Larry Simons won the 500 freestyle in 5:32.48.

The Owls also placed first in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

As for the girls, they tied with the Olympians 93-93.

Katya Cox won the 200 freestyle in 2:09.41, Maren McClure won the 200 medley in 2:23.74 and Lillian Sunbury won the 500 freestyle in 5:47.89.

The Owls won the 400 freestyle relay to close the event and obtain the tie.

The girls will be back in action on Monday when they host Henryville, and the boys will gear up for the Hoosier Hills Conference meet next Saturday at Columbus East.
