Woman dies in North Vernon house fire

North Vernon police said a woman died in a house fire at 11:50 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of West Walnut Street.

North Vernon Police Department Sgt. Andrew Richmond said officers were sent to the fire, where they found the structure engulfed in flames with the main entrance blocked by fire and heavy smoke.

Officers located two occupants who had been able to exit the residence. Officers spotted an adult female trying to exit a bedroom window. Heavy smoke was already exiting the same window. Rescue attempts were made; however, the female was not able to be rescued from the window, Richmond said.

A short time later, officers lost sight of and contact with the female, and she perished in the residence, Richmond said.

At this time, the identity of the deceased is not being released, Richmond said. The Indiana State Fire Marshal is still investigating the cause of the fire.
