ISP promotes Brownstown Central grad

A state trooper who grew up in Brownstown recently was promoted from master trooper to the position of sergeant with the Indiana State Police’s K-9 division.

ISP Superintendent Douglas Carter announced the promotion of Christopher Richey.

After Richey graduated from Brownstown Central High School in 1992, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served active duty for eight years, according to a news release from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.

In December 2000, Richey graduated from the 60th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy and then was assigned to patrol duties with the Versailles District, said Wheeles, who is the district’s public information officer.

In 2005, Richey was selected to become a K-9 handler. Since becoming a K-9 handler, Richey has patrolled with two different K-9s. Heiko retired in 2012, and his current K-9, Rayner, is nearly 11 years old.

He became a K-9 trainer in 2014 and a master trainer in 2017. In 2019, he was moved from the Versailles District to the state police’s special operations division to serve as one of three full-time master trainers, training ISP K-9s throughout the state.

In his new position, Richey will continue to train and certify K-9s from the state police and other police departments across the state.

Richey now lives in Franklin County with his wife, Aimee, and their two children.
