Braves primed for big game versus Silver Creek

When Brownstown head coach Reed May looks back at last week’s victory over Indian Creek, he thought there was some lack of intensity that the Braves can’t afford to lack this upcoming Friday.

With a team struggling like Indian Creek sandwiched between the Seymour game and Silver Creek game on Brownstown’s schedule, May said he wasn’t necessarily surprised that happened.

“It’s a win,” May said. “I think defensively, we didn’t play near as well as we did against Seymour. Again, you still won 54-20 so you still gotta be happy you came away with a win. I just felt we lacked a little bit of intensity that we had the week before.”

The win improved the Braves to 7-0 on the season with just two games remaining in the regular-season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Brownstown got tackles for loss from Keetan Burcham-Jones, Ryan Branaman and Dustyn Kocsis. Adam Wayt, Eli Wischmeier and Burcham-Jones contributed quarterback sacks, and Jake Pauley added an interception that he returned 47 yards.

“They’re starting to play well,” May said of his defense. “We’re a lot faster on defense than we were last year.”

Brownstown is welcoming Silver Creek to its home field on Friday for a big showdown in the Mid-Southern Conference.

The Dragons are 4-2 this season with losses to South Oldham in Kentucky and Jeffersonville. Silver Creek is 3-0 in the MSC and still considered the favorite to win the conference.

“They’re the favorites for the conference,” May said. “They beefed up their schedule this year. Even though they’ve got two losses right now, they’ve played a much tougher schedule than we have. They’re just a very good football team and we’re gonna have to bring our A game.”

Silver Creek defeated Brownstown 42-14 last season to win the MSC. May said it left the Braves with a bad taste in their mouths.

“I think the kids are gonna be extremely motivated,” May said. “But you can be as motivated as you want, but if you don’t bring your A game you’re not going to win.”

The winner of Friday’s matchup will at least clinch a share of the MSC conference title. If Brownstown wins its final two games — Friday versus Silver Creek and next week at Scottsburg — it would win the conference outright.

May believes his team’s attention to detail has been solid this week in practice, and he expects a big crowd and big-game atmosphere this Friday under the lights in Brownstown.

Friday night’s game also marks teacher appreciation night for the Braves’ football players.

Each player picked a teacher that has influenced them in their life. On Tuesday this week, they brought that teacher their white football jersey, and the teacher can wear it to the game, get in free and will be recognzied in-between the first and second quarter.

It’s been a tradition Brownstown has been doing for quite some time now, and Superintendent Tim Taylor first suggested the idea and May thought it was a good one.

“It’s nice to see our kids reward teachers who have been a positive influnce in their life,” May said.
