Results of the annual Indiana Junior Duck Stamp Contest at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour have been announced.

There were 286 entries, judged April 1 at the Jennings County Public Library in North Vernon. Sabra Harms, an 18-year-old student from Fort Wayne, won the State Best of Show award and $100. Her entry was forwarded to the national Junior Duck Stamp Contest to compete against other state winners.

The contest promotes learning about waterfowl and conservation by creating art. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade enter by creating a picture of a native duck, goose or swan and submitting it to the refuge. The contest is judged in four age categories with three first-, second- and third-place winners in each age category, plus 16 honorable mentions.

Several area students fared well in this year’s contest. Addison Otte of Crothersville was a first-place winner in her age group, Gavin Ross of North Vernon was a third-place winner and brothers Owen and Thomas Kinder of Deputy were honorable mention winners.

The national Junior Duck Stamp winner was a Kansas student, and their drawing will be made into a collectible stamp, the sales of which support educational programs and activities that nurture young conservationists. About 2,000 Junior Duck Stamps are sold each year for $5 each.

The contest is sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with support from other organizations.
