Marshall hitting stride as Owls place 10th at Bloomington North Invite

Owen Marshall has been playing to his potential as of late, and it’s showing up on the score sheets.

On Saturday at the Bloomington North Invite at Cascades Golf Course, Marshall shot a 77, which was tied for the fifth-best score across the invite.

"He’s doing his part," head coach Jim Hoffman said. "He’s turning it on."

Marshall had a good day despite not putting his best either.

"He’s striking the ball well, he’s driving the ball well," Hoffman said. "He’s getting out of trouble. He struggled on the greens a little bit the last two weeks, and he’s still getting good scores. Everything is there except we just got to get some putts to fall."

Marshall’s 77 on Saturday helped lead Seymour to a 10th place finish at the Bloomington North Invite. The Owls finished with a team score of 357. Fourteen other teams competed in the invite, including Center Grove (the winner), Westfield, Covenant Christian, Bedford North Lawrence, Columbus North, Washington, Terre Haute North, Bloomington North, Columbus East, Bloomington South, New Albany, Perry Meridian, Providence and Edgewood.

Ethan Dippold and Noah Surface each shot a 46, Manny Fontanez shot a 50 and Andrew Knieriem shot a 60.

Hoffman believes the team has hit a bit of a wall over the past couple of weeks, and that continued on Saturday.

"Overall (on Saturday) we really struggled on the greens," Hoffman said. "We’ve just hit sort of a wall, and we’re trying to get over it. We’re just going to have to focus more on our practice routines and thinking through our shot. It’s really frustrating because we have the potential."

Seymour is still relatively young, though. Marshall and Dippold are the lone seniors on varsity.

Marshall is trying to do his part as one of the experienced leaders on the team.

"He’s been a great leader trying to keep these guys motivated," Hoffman said. "He’s really been the driving force for the team concept. It’s an individual sport but we play for the team."

Golf is such a mental game, and that’s where some of the Owls’ struggles are right now. Hoffman said it’s all about confidence, and he’s trying to build back up some of the players’ confidence so they can return to their normal, consistent form.

Though he isn’t pleased with how the team is performing at this point in the season, he knows there’s plenty of time to right the ship before the conference tournament.

"We’re just gonna have to refocus, practice harder with a little bit more purpose," Hoffman said. "I think we’ll be OK going into the Hoosier Hills Conference coming up."

Seymour has defeated every team in the HHC so far this season except Floyd Central, so there’s already some team confidence regarding the upcoming conference tournament.

The Owls will host Jennings County and Madison on Tuesday before getting a week off, returning to action on May 18 against Columbus North, and then the Hoosiers Hill Conference Tournament will take place on May 22.

"We want to have a high finish there going into sectional," Hoffman said. "As a team, we went to get out of the sectional. The potential is there. We have to work really hard the next couple of weeks."
