Columbus drivers win divisions at fairgrounds

Brandon Malone and Elijah Knoke, both of Columbus, picked up division victories April 23 at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds.

In a last-minute decision to race after Jennings County Outlaw Karting postponed its season opener, promoter Tim Smith opened the gates for the Columbus Speedway Go-Karts.

The next scheduled go-kart events at the fairgrounds will be May 14 and 15.

Neal wins at Bloomington

Tyler Neal of Paragon won the Indiana Late Model Series event April 23 at Bloomington Speedway.

Shelby Miles of Bloomington was second, followed by Tyler Cain of Seymour, Tyler Collins of North Vernon and Keegan Cox from Franklin. Completing the top 10 were Austin Tunny, Steve Peeden, Zack Burton, Alan Magner and Michael Daugherty.

Max Adams won the sprint car feature.

Brownstown back in action tonight

With weather that plagued several area tracks last weekend, Brownstown Speedway gets back to racing action tonight with the Scott Patman Memorial for super stocks. Also on the card will be pro late models, modifieds, pure stocks and hornets.

Patman was the 1991 street stock and 1995 modified track champion at Brownstown. He died in 2015 at the age of 57.

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Indiana Icebreaker rescheduled to be completed tomorrow has been moved to September as part of the Jackson 100 weekend. The move was necessitated due to the demolition of the Turn 4 outside grandstands, which are to be replaced by new stands.

Twin Cities racing tonight

After being rained out last weekend, Twin Cities Raceway Park in Vernon will be back in action tonight with a hornet special. Also racing will be crate late models, super stocks, pure stocks, crown vics and 410 steel block sprints.

Stewart’s All-Stars in Columbus tonight

Tony Stewart’s All-Star Circuit of Champion TQ Midgets will be in action tonight at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fairgrounds. Action is slated to start at 6 p.m.

Lawrenceburg will race tonight

After being washed out last weekend, as well, Lawrenceburg Speedway will be racing tonight with sprints, modifieds, pure stocks and hornets.

Lawrenceburg last raced April 17 with Nick Bilbee winning the sprint car feature over Tyler Kendall, Garrett Abrams, Korbyn Hayslett and J.J. Hughes. David Spille won the open wheel modified feature over Daniel Sanchez, Kyle Schornick, Daniel Dehner and Scottie Williams.

Florence Lucas Oil race tonight

Florence Speedway in Union, Kentucky, will host the 35th annual Ralph Latham Memorial Race tonight.

A top prize of $15,000 will be up for grabs in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned event. Also competing will be the American Modified Series and sport mods. Pit gates open at 3 p.m. with main and back gates opening at 5:30 p.m. Hot laps are set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Florence was rained out last weekend. Previously, on April 17, Josh Rice won the $5,000-to-win late model feature over Robby Hensley, Zack Dohm, Michael Chilton and Trevor Landrum. Josh Dietz won the crate late model feature over Jordan Hedger, Jim Couch, Jeremy Owens and Brad Rickels.

Former local racer dies

Jack Smith of Columbus died April 16. He was 82.

Smith began his racing career in 1957 at “The Hole” Columbus Speedway. He later raced V-8 late model stock cars at 25th Street Fairgrounds Raceway in Columbus and at Brownstown Speedway. He then raced hobby stock cars at Brownstown and Twin Cities. He ended his career by racing in enduros.

Smith was the last track champion in the history of the 25th Street Fairgrounds Raceway in 1974.

Glotzbach died last week

Former NASCAR, ARCA and dirt racer Charlie Glotzbach died April 23 in Jeffersonville. He was 82.

A standout at asphalt short tracks in Kentucky and southern Indiana, he was a four-time Cup Series winner, including the tour’s first restrictor plate event at Michigan International Speedway.

“Chargin’ Charlie” made 124 Cup Series starts from 1960 to 1992 with 38 top-five finishes. He was the first NASCAR driver to exceed 200 mph at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.

Glotzbach was twice a runner-up in the Daytona 500, losing on the final lap to LeeRoy Yarbrough in 1969. He was ARCA’s 1964 Rookie of the Year and was an eight-time winner on the circuit.

His dirt late model racing included 1981-1983 starts in the Jackson 100 at Brownstown Speedway with a best finish of 11th. Besides Brownstown, he also raced regularly at Charlestown and Scottsburg in the early 1980s.

From 50 years ago tonight at Twin Cities, Tommy Day made it three in a row to start the 1971 season.

Also, from 50 years ago tonight at Whitewater Valley Speedway in Liberty, Gene Petro won the late model feature over Ron Baker and Kenny Baker.

In 1971 at Bloomington Speedway, it was Bob Kinser winning the sprint car feature over Sheldon Kinser, Calvin Gilstrap, Mike Johnson and Buzz Gregory.

This weekend in 1971 at Haubstadt, Chuck Amati won the sprint car feature over Larry Miller. Jack Owens won the late model feature over Tom Helfrich.

From 40 years ago in 1981 at Brownstown, Paul Crockett won the late model feature over Kenny Simpson, Russ Petro, Don Hobbs and Steve Barnett. Bob Johnson won the modified street stock feature over Ernie Niemoeller, Gene Minor, Larry Plessinger and Buck Campbell.

Also from 40 years ago at Paragon Speedway, it was Sammy Swindell winning the sprint car feature over Doug Wolfgang, Lee Osborne, Fred Linder and Bobby Marshall.

From 20 years ago in 2001 at Brownstown, Mark Barber won the late model feature race over Dick Phillips, Ernie Barrow, Gary Burton and Dion Deason. Bubba Woods won the bomber feature over Robert Walters, Charlie Stevens Jr., Jim Ruddick and Matt Bex. Adam Sasser took the open wheel modified feature over Earl Plessinger, John DeMoss, Matt Boknecht and Levi Godsey. Gordon Dixon took the pro truck feature over Tony Fraley, Rodney Tine, Jason Basham and Glenn Luckett.
