Seymour native Cantu places second at regionals, advances to nationals

Seymour native Mia Cantu had a big weekend at the United States of America Gymnastics level 9 regional gymnastics championships on Sunday in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Cantu finished second overall, advancing herself to easterns/nationals on May 8 in Atlanta.
The 14-year-old grew up in Seymour, but recently moved to Madison to be closer to her training facility for gymnastics.
Cantu, who is nicknamed “the vault monster” for her ability to pull off impressive moves off the vault, showed out in that event on Sunday. She scored a 9.80 on the vault, which is her personal record.
In addition to the vault, she scored a 9.425 on the beam, 9.45 on the bars and 8.90 on the floor.
Cantu got off to an unusually slow start on her floor routine, but she rebounded nicely in the other three events, especially on her vault. She will look to continue to improve over the next couple of weeks before nationals in early May.
