Immanuel Lutheran wins 8th grade girls event

Immanuel Lutheran bested St. Charles of Bloomington 31-20 to win the 28th annual Lutheran Invitational Tournament for eight grade girls basketball Sunday, concluding the two-day event at Trinity Lutheran High School in Seymour.

The Warriors went 3-0 for the weekend to record their fourth championship in tournament history. They defeated White Creek Lutheran of Columbus 42-25 and Lutheran Central of Brownstown 40-21 to reach the title game. Lutheran Central was the official tournament host.

Other tournament participants included St. Peter’s Lutheran (Columbus), St. John’s Sauers Lutheran (Seymour), Holy Cross Lutheran (Fort Wayne) and Wyneken Memorial Lutheran (Decatur).

St. John’s Sauers defeated Lutheran Central 26-23 in the third-place game. St. Peter’s won the consolation game over Wyneken 35-34. Holy Cross took seventh place over White Creek 48-43.

Holy Cross received the Christian Sportsmanship Award for the tournament.

The all-tournament team selected by the coaches consisted of Abby Followell (Immanuel), Madison Keith (Immanuel), Ava Robbennolt (St. Charles), Jenna Klosterman (Sauers), Mallory Klosterman (Sauers), Addison Darlage (Lutheran Central), Sydney Johnson (St. Peter’s), Avery Johnson (St. Peter’s), Jordan Brewer (White Creek) and Cella Kaiser (Holy Cross).

The Indiana Lutheran Schools Athletic Association state tournament for eighth grade girls and boys is scheduled for Feb. 26 through 28 in Fort Wayne. Local teams participating in the girls state tournament are Immanuel, St. John’s Sauers and St. Peter’s.

Teams from Lutheran Central, Immanuel and St Peter’s are scheduled to compete in the boys tourney.
