Seymour gymnasts look strong against Shelbyville

Coach Angie Mellencamp says she likes the direction her Seymour gymnastics team is headed following a 97.475-91.575 win over Shelbyville on Thursday night at Gymnastics Lane.

That score is a season high for the Owls.

“The girls are working through their nerves a lot better,” she said. “Beam was the best they’ve done so far this season. They stayed on it, we didn’t have as many falls and their jumps are coming around a lot nicer.”

Kayli Carter placed first in beam with a score of 8.35.

“Bars were good,” Mellencamp said. “We’re still struggling with our connections. They have a lot of stops between their skills. We’ve got to get the connections to get those scores up.”

Lillie Cote led the Owls on bars, placing second overall with a score of 7.7.

“Vault was good tonight. A couple of the girls are adding some more twisting, which is raising their scores up,” the coach said. “Floor I’m really happy with. We’re putting in the big skills. We did have a couple of falls on our new skills, and that’s OK. That’s to be expected. This is the time to have those falls so that we can get them cleaned up before sectional.”

Ivy Brown, Piper Hawkins and Ava Reedy tied for second on vault with scores of 8.45, while Cote won floor exercise with a score of 8.45.

Paige Smith led the Owls in all-around with a score of 31.775.

The Owls will compete Monday night at Bloomington North, and their next home meet will be Feb. 2 against Columbus North.
