Floyd Central scored on its first seven possessions and ran away from Seymour’s football team, 49-7, on Friday night.

The Highlanders (7-2) attacked the Owls (3-6) on the ground and in the air with equal success. On the ground, talented and slippery running back Wenkers Wright scored four touchdowns and ran for 204 yards on just 12 carries.

In the air, the Highlanders’ quarterback, Tristan Polk, threw for 218 yards on 8-for-11 passing, including TD passes of 12, 60 and 63 yards.

In all, Floyd Central outgained the Owls in total offensive yardage, 504-122.

“Floyd Central’s in a position we believe we can be in in a couple of years,” Seymour head coach Tyson Moore said. “I told our guys, they did a lot of things right to beat us, but we did a lot of things that cost us.”

After falling behind 21-0 midway through the second quarter, Seymour assembled its best drive of the night, travelling 83 yards on 11 plays. The drive ended on an option play in which slot receiver Bret Perry took the handoff from quarterback Cody Ruble and then found fellow freshman Jack Pennington on a 11-yard TD pass.

“That’s a reverse play we installed for the Brownstown game, and we’ve scored on it twice now,” Moore said. “We got lucky, Cody saw the defensive end and chipped him just enough to give Bret enough time.”

That play closed the gap to 21-7 with 3:36 left in the first half, but Floyd Central didn’t seem to feel a change in momentum. The Highlanders responded with two long TD passes that swelled the lead to 35-7 at halftime.

Floyd Central then opened the second half with a 59-yard touchdown run by Wright to expand their advantage to 42-7, which tripped the running clock and effectively ended the game.

Ruble finished with 89 yards and an interception on 11-for-22 passing.

On the ground, the Owls were led by Colin Greathouse’s 24 yards on five attempts. Chandler Drummond added 21 yards on four carries.

Pennington led Seymour receivers with four catches for 59 yards, followed by Perry with four receptions for 30 yards.

With Friday’s loss ending the regular season, the Owls can look forward to a bye week before taking on Whiteland (7-1) on Oct. 30 in the first round of the Class 5A Sectional 14 tournament.

“I like (having a bye week) because we’re banged up right now,” Moore said. “Having Friday off is huge for us. We need it. We’re not going to back off totally, but the extra rest will be good for us.”
