A 36-year-old Seymour man was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday night in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 65.

Columbus police were sent to the area of the 65-mile-marker of the interstate at 9:52 p.m. Sunday about the accident in the southbound lanes, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting pronounced Demetrius A. Burnam, the driver, dead at the scene, Harris said. The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma, Nolting said.

Burnam was driving southbound on the interstate between the State Road 46 and State Road 58 exits when his vehicle left the roadway for an unknown reason and overturned, according to investigators.

First responders arrived to find Burnam dead at the scene. Burnam was the sole occupant of the 2009 Dodge Avenger, investigators said.

Toxicology tests ordered by Nolting are expected to take about two weeks to complete, the coroner’s office said.

The Columbus Police Department accident reconstructionists are continuing an investigation into the accident.
