Commemorating the end of World War II
Thumbs up to the members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925 in Seymour and everyone else involved in the V-J Day service Sunday at the post, 311 S. Jackson Park Drive. This year’s celebration didn’t include a parade for the first time since V-J Day occurred Aug. 14, 1945, but it was the 74th year the community has come together to commemorate the end of World War II and remember those who didn’t come home and those who did.
Long-lasting
Thumbs up to Robert “Gene” and Irma Pearson of Seymour who celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary Wednesday. An open house for the couple will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Heritage Green clubhouse on North Sandy Creek Drive in Seymour. Congratulations to the couple who have reached a milestone that few ever hope to achieve.
Just desserts
Thumbs up to everyone who attended the sixth annual HOPE Medora Goes Pink dessert auction Saturday night at Medora Christian Church. The event, attended by more than 220 people, raised $8,700 for operating expenses, including insurance and storage, for the annual HOPE Medora Goes Pink event conducted on the second Saturday of October each year in the streets of downtown Medora. Through Saturday, HOPE Medora Goes Pink had raised $127,200, money that has been given to people battling cancer for fuel, food and other expenses, over the past decade.
“Fun-raising”
Thumbs to the more than 300 people who showed up in around 70 side-by-sides to participate in the inaugural side-by-side ride Saturday to benefit Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County. The five-hour, 80-mile ride, which began and ended at Luke’s Country Inn in Dudleytown, raised $1,000 for Special Olympics Indiana Jackson County. Preventing crime
Thumbs up to the organizers of a block party and health fair Aug. 6 at Jamestown Apartments in Seymour. The event is designed to allow neighbors to celebrate National Night Out, a crime prevention and awareness day observed in communities across the country. It’s the only site in Jackson County that takes part in National Night Out. During the two-hour event, people enjoy free pizza and socialized with others.
