A 34-year-old Seymour man faces three felonies after police said he battered a woman, choked her and held her against her will in an apartment.

George L. Harrison is being held at the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown on preliminary Level 6 felony charges of battery in the presence of a minor, strangulation and criminal confinement after an incident reported to police Tuesday evening.

Seymour Police Capt. Carl Lamb said people in an apartment in the 400 block of South O’Brien Street told police they heard people yelling next door.

Police responded to the call at 6:41 p.m. Tuesday and found a woman and a child in the apartment.

They then found Harrison, who was in another room. Lamb said Harrison immediately told officers he had a warrant for failure to pay child support out of Bartholomew County and was placed under arrest.

Lamb said Harrison and the woman had been arguing when it escalated, and the two shoved and pushed each other before exchanging punches. At one point, Harrison placed his hands around her neck and would not let her leave.

Lamb said the woman told police she was unable to breathe for a short period of time.

Harrison told officers they were arguing about their relationship.

He was booked into the jail at 7:36 p.m. without bond.

A Level 6 felony is punishable between six months and two and a half years upon conviction. The advisory sentence is one year.
