Class acts

Thumbs-up to members of the inaugural class of the Seymour High School Athletic Hall of Fame. The 15 members of that class, Mickey Beck, Joe Goodman, Bode Hill, Baron Hill, Bud Surface, Rick Mousa, Larry Shade, Donna Sullivan, Teri Moren, John Britton, Walt Wintin, John Judd, Danny Thomas, Barney Scott and Julie VonDielingen Shelton, were recognized Dec. 16 during the Owls varsity boys basketball game against Jennings County.

Scholarly

Thumbs-up to Seymour High School senior Anna May Huff for her selection as the recipient of the Community Foundation of Jackson County’s 2018 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. Huff, the daughter of Barry and Yoko Huff, was selected from a group of 119 outstanding applicants from all six high schools in Jackson County. She will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of her choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.

Making Medora merry

Thumbs-up to everyone involved in establishing the Medora Makers 4-H Club including Medora Community School Corp., its Reach for a Star after-school program, Jackson County 4-H and the Owen-Carr Township Community Fund which donated $3,000 toward the cause. That paid for 4-H program fees for the students, refreshments for special club meetings, project supplies for club meetings, supplies for youth to complete projects for the Jackson County Fair, recognition and awards for club members, startup materials and T-shirts for members and adult volunteers. The club is the only school-based club in Jackson County.

Taking a break

Thumbs-up to Gerri Smith who recently retired after 40 years of service with the Greater Seymour Chamber of Commerce’s events. Smith spent those years helping making sure the annual dinner, ag breakfasts, chamber picnics, golf outing and One Chamber Christmases went off without a hitch.

Thumbs-down to those who watch other people’s house for the delivery of packages, including Christmas presents, and then stealing them.
