Helping out

Thumbs-up to 22-year-old Skylar Thompson for helping his grandparents and their two dogs escape from their burning home on the night of Aug. 4 near Brownstown. Thompson was up doing coursework in preparation for leaving for the U.S. Army two days later. Sounds like he’s ready for the job ahead.

State champion

Thumbs-up to Jackson Lahrman, a junior at Brownstown Central High School, who recently won the National Sporting Clays Association’s 2017 Indiana Sporting Clays Class D championship at the Indiana Gun Club in Fortville.

Distinquished

Thumbs-up to Brownstown Central High School student Maggie Rohlfing who was crowned the 2018 Jackson County Distinguished Young Woman at the end of the competition Saturday in the auditorium at Brownstown Central High School. It takes a lot confidence and a little courage to get up onstage in front of people and talk and perform as Rohlfing, Kaitlyn Silvers, Jenny Runge, Jenna O’Neal and Claire Smith did. The scholarship money the five earned makes it a little easier.

Budding entrepreneurs

Thumbs-up to the many girls at Girls Inc. of Jackson County who recently ran their own lemonade stands and learned some of the things it takes to run a successful business, including planning, budgeting, investment, supply procurement, marketing and selling, to meed demand and reach goals. They also raised $736, some of which was donated to local organizations, including Anchor House Family Assistance Center and Food Pantry and the Don and Dana Myers Cancer Center at Schneck Medical Center.

Bridge work

Thumbs-up to the 300 people who attended the seventh annual Dinner on the Medora Covered Bridge event Aug. 5. Also, a big “thank-you” to local businesses who donated door prizes and to all who helped with the event, including dedicated volunteers Morris Tippin and Nick Walden, who are leading efforts to use funds raised through the dinner and other sources to improve security at the bridge.
