Police arrested a Seymour teacher on charges of child molesting.
Aaron D. Murray, 40, of Seymour, a seventh-grade math teacher at Seymour Middle School, faces two counts of child molesting as a result of an investigation into his relationship with a student, Detective Troy Munson with Seymour Police Department said Wednesday.
Murray has been a teacher with Seymour Community Schools for 15 years.
“This is a very serious crime, and we are saddened, disappointed and angered,” Superintendent Rob Hooker said. “But Seymour police has done a very good job of working with us on this, and we are thankful for Detective Munson’s efforts.”
Hooker said the school corporation will follow its protocol in seeking to terminate Murray’s employment.
Munson said the victim was 12 years old when the relationship began this past school year.
“As the year went on, they began to spend more time together at school-related activities,” Munson said of Murray and the girl. “She warmed up to him, and they made a connection. She would talk to him about things in her life that were bothering her.”
But once school let out for the summer at the end of May, Munson said the relationship “intensified.”
“They continued communicating through social media and began doing things together outside of school, like going shopping or going on hikes,” Munson said.
Although the relationship was inappropriate at that time, Munson said it wasn’t a crime.
“There’s no indication that anything happened during the school year. But it was progressing to that point and ended up developing into a romantic relationship,” he said.
Police became involved in the situation July 1 after the girl’s parents reported it.
“She had friends that became aware of the relationship after they saw some texts that they thought were inappropriate knowing that Aaron Murray was her teacher,” Munson said.
The friends then informed the girl’s parents, who reported it to police, Munson said.
Munson said there are three or four incidents that he is aware of where he believes Murray engaged in sexual contact with the girl. That information came from interviews with Murray, the girl and her friends.
Munson said Murray cooperated with police during the investigation and admitted to the allegations.
“I arrested him at the end of his interview Tuesday,” Munson said.
At this time, Munson said, he is not aware of any other victims.
Murray was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 8:03 p.m. Tuesday and was being held without bond.
It will be up to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office to determine what charges will be brought against Murray.
Both Munson and Hooker said Murray had been in legal trouble before when he was accused of throwing a calculator at a girl, hitting her in the head.
He faced a misdemeanor criminal recklessness charge at the time, and the case went to trial. Murray was found not guilty Nov. 14, 2014, by the jury.
