Marshall Howard, 81, of Seymour, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, at his home. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born Dec. 24, 1933, in Leslie County, Kentucky, he was the son of Girdley Howard and Frankie Campbell Walker, both of whom preceded him in death.

On Dec. 2, 1956, in Plainfield, he married Sharon Hackney Howard, who survives.

Marshall proudly served for many years in the United States Army, where he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Army Occupation medal for his service in during the Korean War.

While serving in Germany as a sergeant first class in Company B of the 12th Armored Infantry Battalion, Marshall was on border patrol between East Germany and West Germany. He was honorably discharged after 5½ years of service.

Marshall was a faithful member of the Church of Christ on Meadowbrook Drive in Seymour and, after his distinguished service in the U.S. Armed Forces, he was the owner of Marshall’s Service Center for 23 years. After retiring as the owner of the service center, he worked at Swifty Oil Co. for 12 years prior to his final retirement. Marshall also proudly served the local community in many capacities including as a member of Seymour Board of Zoning Appeals from January of 1986 to December of 2014 and a past president of that board; a 42-year member and past president of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Merit Board; a past president of the Seymour Freeman Field Municipal Airport board; and a longtime member of the Lions Club.

Marshall will be greatly missed by his loving family and many dear friends.

Besides his wife; survivors include his two children, Debra K. Howard-Smith and Douglas R. Howard; two grandchildren, Richard Sebert Smith and Ashley (Kendall) Walters; a great-grandchild, Josalyn Jade Walters; and three siblings, John Walker of Cornettsville, Kentucky, and Walter Walker and Nora (Walker) Morgan, all of Hyden, Kentucky.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, William A. Smith; five brothers, Ernie Walker, Martin Walker, Melvin Roy Walker, Donald Ray Walker and Malcolm Walker; and two sisters, Shirley (Walker) Lance and Maggie Mae Walker.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Voss Chapel with Johnathon Purkhiser and Jonathan Reames officiating. Burial will follow at Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1415 North Gate Road, Madison.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home.
