City election filing period comes to end

A Seymour Democrat beat Friday’s filing deadline to have her name placed on the May 5 primary ballot.

Tammy Riordan joined a growing field of candidates, although most are with the Republican Party.

Riordan declared her candidacy Thursday for the Seymour City Council District 4 seat. That seat has been held by Republican Jim Rebber for five terms, although Rebber is facing a challenge in the primary from newcomer Philip Hardwick.

Riordan, who does not have any opposition in the primary, said her decision to run stems from her interest in politics and a willingness to help her community.

She said the lack of Democrat candidates across the board also played a role.

“I think people need a choice,” she said.

With the close of the filing period, three races are set for the primary.

The GOP race for the District 3 council seat presently held by Danny Sloan is the largest. It features three political newcomers, Matt Nicholson, David L. Pollert and Kurt Newkirk.

The race for Republican nominations for the two at-large council seats also features three candidates: Darrin R. Boas, Dovie Stidham and Kendra Zumhingst.

Boas recently obtained that seat, vacated by Republican Jennifer Siefker when she moved to Washington state, by defeating Zumhingst 8-3 in a caucus of precinct committee members.

The other GOP race on the ballot is for District 4.

Two-term Republican Mayor Craig Luedeman will not be facing a primary challenge, and neither will six-term Republican Clerk-treasurer Fred Lewis.

The only other new filing in recent days added a candidate to the field of people seeking the five Crothersville Town Council seats. That field grew to five with Republican J.D. Woods’ declaration of candidacy.

Woods said Friday that he does not want to see a lot of wholesale changes made in Crothersville, but he would like to see plans put in place to deal with issues before other projects are added to the list of things to do.

The other Crothersville candidates are Democrats Brenda Holzworth, Nancy Hopper, Robert Lyttle and Geoffrey Walker.

Candidates for offices in Brownstown, Crothersville and Medora have until August to make declarations of candidacy.
