A 57-year-old Marion County man who fled from police after disregarding a stop sign and operating with no headlights in Seymour on Monday wound up in jail on eight criminal charges, police report.

Joe N. Alford of Indianapolis faces Level 6 felony charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and possession of methamphetamine after the incident that began when Jackson County Sheriff’s Department Officer Zach Elliott attempted to stop a car on Tipton Street near Meadowbrook Drive at about 8:45 p.m. Monday.

The driver of that vehicle, later identified as Alford, turned into the parking lot of German American Bank in the 1700 block of East Tipton Street before accelerating and going west over a curb into the parking lot of Popeye’s Louisiana Chicken. The vehicle then became stuck in a ditch between that restaurant and Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill and Bar.

At that point, Alford left the vehicle and began to run but was caught by Elliott and county Reserve Officer Dakota Burke, according to a news release from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

During a search of the vehicle, police reported finding methamphetamine, marijuana and paraphernalia along with tools with The Home Depot security tags still attached. Police later talked with store employees who confirmed the tools had been stolen and had a value of more than $700.

Alford also faces Class A misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement on foot and theft, Class B misdemeanor charges of leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving causing property damage and possession of marijuana and a Class C misdemeanor charge of possession of paraphernalia. He was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 11:56 p.m. Monday and was being held without bond. He also is being held on a Marion County warrant.

County officers Justin Amos and Aaron Wilkins along with county Reserve Officer Jon Green assisted with the investigation.
