Local woman injured in crash in Columbus

A Jackson County woman was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Columbus that left her and two others injured, police report.

Cheryl A. Hanner, 66, of Norman was transported to Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of significant non-life-threatening injuries, according to a news release from the Columbus Police Department.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, CPD officers responded to the 700 block of South Marr Road in regards to a vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers later determined a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by Luis Y. Otero, 16, of Columbus, was traveling north in the 700 block of South Marr Road when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed over the center line, striking head-on a 2016 Toyota Corolla, driven by Hanner, police said.

Otero and his passenger, Kole D. Shewmaker, 16, of Columbus, were injured in the crash. Shewmaker was flown by IU Lifeline to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he is in extremely critical condition, police said. Otero also was lifelined to IU Methodist Hospital for treatment and is in serious condition.

The crash is being investigated by the Bartholomew County accident reconstruction team.
