Officers with Seymour Police Department are participating in the 2016 Click It or Ticket campaign that began Friday and will continue through May 30.

Police Chief Bill Abbott said the campaign is a great way to increase the conversation with the public about the use of seat belts to stay safe.

More than 15 city officers will work overtime to conduct the campaign around the clock.

From 6 to 10 p.m. May 23, Seymour officers will join other officer from across the eastern half of the country in a “Border to Border Mobilization” effort.

During a similar campaign recently conducted in the city, 94 percent of the drivers wore seat belts before it began, a number that grew to 97 percent when it was over, Seymour Capt. Carl Lamb said.

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute is funding the campaign through its traffic safety division.

According to the institute, there were 818 fatalities in the Hoosier State in 2015, and 33 percent of those involved unrestrained motorists or passengers.
