The Seymour volleyball team opened its season, and its Hoosier Hills Conference schedule on the right foot Saturday by defeating Jeffersonville 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

“It was a great start the whole day,” Owls Coach Angie Lucas said. “Our freshmen won, our JV won so it’s a clean sweep for us and we are really excited to start the season like that.”

The first set was tied at 5-5 when Abby Otte and Anna Fish blocked a Jeffersonville kill attempt, and Otte followed with a kill.

Those points came during an 8-0 run, as a kill by Maggie Braman made it an 11-5 score and Seymour led the rest of the way. The set point came on an attacking error for the Red Devils.

Jeff jumped on top 4-1 in the second set before an ace by Fish gave Seymour its first lead at 7-6.

The Owls were leading 16-12 when Williams took control of the second set. She had three straight kills to set the score 19-12, and she had six kills on Seymour’s final nine points, including a kill on set point.

Seymour opened with a 5-1 lead in the third set, led 8-3 on a kill by Williams, 10-5 on a kill by Braman, and 14-8 on an ace by Campbell.

Match point came on a kill by Otte.

The Owls were 66-75-34 in attacks with Williams 15-17-10 and Fish was 18-20-7.

Lucas said, “I was really proud of Zoe today, and Abby swinging on the right side for us. These two girls really carried a lot of weight far as scoring points for us and getting kills. That is a very positive sign for us.

“I think our ball control, our first contact was really good. I’ve said all along I feel that is a strength of this team and it showed today during our match. “

Libero Norah Campbell had 21 digs.

Lucas said, “She is a very good player. On defense, there are some things we want her to continue to work on, all of them in fact, but it is great to have that strong presence in the back row.”

Williams said she received a lot of good sets. “The connection is very strong. Maggie was our setter last year and her coming in this year was a good thing for us to be able to connect. We really stepped into it this year.

“We stayed very strong the entire time. We never gave up a long run of points, and we always kept on going. Norah is very good at getting everywhere. She can pick up any ball that comes near her.”

Jeff managed back-to-back points twice in the first set. The Red Devils had one string of three points, and scored back-to-back points only one time in the second set, and the visitors had their longest string

of four points in the third set that cut Seymour’s’ 19-10 lead to 19-14 before Otte had a kill to get the momentum back for the Owls.

Seymour will host Columbus North Tuesday with the freshmen and JV matches set to start at 5:30 p.m.

“We need to get our blocks up a little better,” Williams said. “Other than that, I really think it is all put together. There is still work to do, but we’re doing well.”
