Max J. McKain, age 91, of Brownstown, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown, surrounded by his loving family.

Max was employed with Duke Energy, f/k/a Public Service, for more than 30 years, and he was a deliverer for Crown Supply for over 20 years. Mr. McKain served in the Korean War for 18 months, and he was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Max was of the Baptist faith.

Max loved spending time with his family, especially with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed playing his guitar, particularly playing in the White River Valley Boys band with his two brothers, Dean and Dallas. He also enjoyed gardening and canning.

Born on April 8, 1932, at his home at Shale Hill, Max was the son of John R. and Bess (Cockerham) McKain, both of whom preceded him in death. On April 12, 1957, at Brownstown First Baptist Church, he married Jennie Irene Seals, and she preceded him in death on May 17, 2011.

Survivors include two daughters: Sherry (Jeff) Settle of Vallonia, and Debra McKain of Brownstown; four grandchildren: Lindsey (Gregg) Goshorn, Kevin Settle, Kourtney (Tyler) Hoevener, and Kyan McKain; four great-grandchildren: Remy Goshorn, Baylor Goshorn, Gentry Goshorn, and Ellisyn Hoevener; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. McKain was also preceded in death by nine brothers: Richard McKain, Roscoe (Anita) McKain, Otis (Doris) McKain, Johnny (Naomi) McKain, Roland (Lorraine) McKain, Dean (Madeline) McKain, Jack (Betty) McKain, Dallas (Betty) McKain, and James Phillip McKain; and three sisters: Catherine (Pete) Critchlow, Ethel Jackson, and Shirley (Delmer) Robinette.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Hoosier Christian Village for the love and care Max and his family received.

Funeral services for Max J. McKain will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, with Pastor Daniel Ison and Pastor Chris Criminger officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown.

Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Brownstown.

Military honors will be presented by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled American Veterans 47, and Vietnam Vets 7.

Memorials may be given to Jackson County Sheriff K-9 Unit or Hoosier Christian Village Auxiliary.
