County unemployment rate at 2.8%

Jackson County’s unemployment rate stood at 2.8% in January, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s latest report.

Overall, 23,102 county residents were on the job in January. That’s 63 more than in January 2022 when 23,039 county residents were working. The jobless rate at that time also was 2.8%.

The January rate, which is preliminary, rose from the December 2022 final rate of 2.2%.

The number of county residents reporting they were looking for work in January was 664, compared to the 670 who were looking for work during the same month a year earlier.

The county’s labor force was 23,766 in January, which is 57 more than labor force of 23,709 during the same month in 2021.

The county’s unemployment rate for January was lower than the state’s rate of 3.4% and the national rate of 3.9%.

Other nearby counties and their unemployment rates for January were Bartholomew, 2.7%; Brown, 3.7%; Jennings, 3.8%; Lawrence, 3.9%; Monroe, 3%; Scott, 3.3%; and Washington, 3%.

Boone, Gibson and Hamilton counties had the lowest rate in the state at 2.3% in January, and LaGrange County had the highest at 5.2%.
