Volkswalking program set for Tuesday in Bedford

Teena Ligman will talk about volkswalking for this month’s Bedford Parks Department program at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the historic Otis Park Bath House, 607 Tunnelton Road, Bedford.

RSVP at 812-275-5692 or email [email protected] to ensure there are enough handouts and chairs ready.

Ligman, a local outdoors person, backpacker and vice president of the state volkswalking association, will present the program, and other local volkswalkers will be there to share their experiences.

This unique sport is all about walking with friends, staying healthy and seeing interesting places. Volkswalks are scheduled around the state in state parks, forests, historical areas, interesting towns and in conjunction with festivals.

The sport started in Germany and has spread to 42 countries, so you can literally walk the world doing volkswalks. With each one, you can walk with other people and make new friends on a route for a 5K or 10K (3.1 or 6.2 miles) distance. The events are free.

Come hear from people who have volkswalked around the world and learn where you can walk close to home or around the country if you travel.

The Bedford Walking Club hosts four year-round volkswalks nearby that you can walk at any time, and one traditional volkswalk, which is more in the true spirit of volkswalks, will be held this year on April 15 at Morgan-Monroe State Forest in Martinsville. Ligman also will have information on interesting walks around the state almost every weekend.
