SFD hires new firefighter

Seymour Fire Department’s newest firefighter Jayden Brown recently was sworn in by Mayor Matt Nicholson during a board of public works and safety meeting.

The 21-year-old Brown was born and raised in Seymour, and the career path he has decided to take runs in the family with his father being a firefighter in Columbus and his stepfather being a member of Seymour Fire Department.

Brown graduated from Seymour High School with Academic Honors in 2020 and spent a year at Indiana University Southeast playing baseball. Some of his hobbies include being outdoors, fishing and spending time with his friends and loved ones.

Brown said he always wanted to be a firefighter since he grew up around the fire department and wanted to make his family proud by following in his fathers’ footsteps.

Brown hopes to make a positive impact and protect the community he grew up in as well as working with all of the firefighters at the Seymour Fire Department. He also looks forward to creating relationships with his fellow firefighters.

“I’m excited for a long and healthy career,” Brown said.

Seymour Fire Chief Brad Lucas said he looks forward to having Brown as part of the team and that it has been around a year and four months since they hired someone new.

As the Seymour Fire Department adds a new firefighter to its team, they also thank their most recent retiree, Ron Toppe, who served the department and the city for more than 28 years.
