Scholarships available for former Hayden Elementary students

Eligible Jennings County High School seniors who attended Hayden Elementary School and are planning to attend college or a vocation trade school have several scholarships available for which they can apply.

Applications may be picked up in the high school guidance office and must be returned there by March 10. Most of the scholarships require applicants to have attended Hayden Elementary School for four or more years.

The available scholarships include:

Edward and Marjorie Kehrt Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school and be a resident of Spencer Township. This award was established with the Jennings County Community Foundation by the Kehrt estate and is in memory of Ed and Marjorie Kehrt. Ed was an active volunteer in the community, serving on the Spencer Township Volunteer Fire Department and other local organizations. Marjorie was a longtime cook at Hayden Elementary School. This award consists of a plaque, and last year’s winner received $1,243.87.

John and Alice Wohrer Memorial Scholarship

Preference will be given to applicants planning to gain a degree in the field of education. This scholarship was established in memory of John and Alice Wohrer, who were promoters of education in Spencer Township during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many of the Wohrer descendants from across the country joined together to establish the fund with the Jennings County Community Foundation. The award consists of a plaque, and last year’s recipient received $1,512.36.

Martha M. Vogel Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. Vogel was a 1997 Jennings County High School graduate who lost her life in an automobile accident in 1998. Family and friends of Vogel established this award in her memory with the Jennings County Community Foundation. Two applicants will be selected. Last year’s recipients each received a plaque and $500.

Michael Euler Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. This award is in memory of Michael Euler, a former Hayden student and the last Spencer Township resident to lose his life while serving his country. The Hayden High School Alumni Association sponsors this scholarship, and the award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $1,000.

Pat Sullivan/Rodger Ruddick Honorary Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Bessenger established this scholarship to honor Pat Sullivan and Rodger Ruddick for their continued involvement with the youth of the Hayden and Spencer Township community. The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $500.

Apphia Wohrer Gerth Memorial Scholarship

Applicants must be admitted to a college, junior college, technical or trade school. This award will be given to a senior who had been a member of the Hayden Little Hoosier Historians. This scholarship was established in memory of Apphia Wohrer Gerth, a former schoolteacher and one of the founding directors of the Hayden Historical Museum. She took a great interest in the activities of the Little Hoosier chapter and was one of its biggest supporters. The award consists of a plaque and a cash award of $250.

Berneda Haines Ruddick and Everett Haines Scholarship

Applicants must be accepted at a college, university, junior college, professional, vocation or trade school and must have attended at least fifth and sixth grades at Hayden Elementary. Preference will be given to an applicant who had been a member of the Hayden Little Hoosier Historians history club. Berneda Haines Ruddick established this scholarship with the Jennings County Community Foundation in memory of her late husband, Everett, and as a way of supporting the students of Hayden and providing an incentive for those who wish to further their education after high school. The award consists of a plaque, and last year’s payout was $10,000 per semester. This scholarship is renewable as long as the student maintains his or her grade point average for the four years of their pursuit of higher education.
