For the second time this season, Brownstown Central’s Jack Benter has been named the IBCA/Franciscan Health Player of the Week for boys basketball players in District 3.

Six players from around the state were selected as Week 13 (Jan. 23 to 28) IBCA/Franciscan Health Players of the Week, one boy and one girl from each of the three districts.

Tippecanoe Valley’s Nolan Cumberland won it for the boys in District 1, while Columbia City’s Addison Baxter won it for the girls. In District 2, Yorktown’s A.J. Dunn for the boys and West Lafayette’s Adrianne Tolen for the girls. In District 3, Owen Valley’s Reagan Martin joined Benter for the honor.

Benter scored nearly 100 points in two games last week, setting a school record in one game, then setting it again in the very next game.

Overall, the Braves won four games, all Mid-Southern Conference games, against Silver Creek (85-74), at Austin (81-45), against Charlestown (81-42) and against Corydon Central (84-53).

In the Silver Creek game, the 6-foot-5 guard scored a school-record 48 points on 15-of-26 shooting, including 5-of-12 from deep, and 13-of-14 from the charity stripe. He chipped in four rebounds and four assists, as well. He broke his dad’s record, which Dave Benter set in 1992 against Brown County when he scored 47.

In the very next game at Austin, the Purdue University commit topped that effort with 51 points on 17-of-32 from the field, 8-of-15 from outside and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. He posted a double-double with 12 rebounds against Austin, plus he added two assists and four steals.

Benter didn’t need to do much scoring in the other games as he scored nine points against Charlestown and 17 points against Corydon as the Braves took control of the MSC with a 7-0 conference record.

The first time Benter won this award was earlier this season from Nov. 28 to Dec. 3.

Benter and the Braves, 13-4 overall, will play at Columbus East on Thursday night.

This is the 15th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program but just the third season it is being presented by Franciscan Health, a corporate sponsor of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Girls State Finals. Boys winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Boys State Finals.
