The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory that went to effect at 1 a.m. today and will continue until 7 p.m.

One to three inches of heavy, wet snow with wind gusts of up to 35 miles per hour is expected in Jackson County and surrounding counties, including Lawrence and Jennings.

Snow rates were expected to be high at times late Tuesday night into this morning. There also is a 30% chance of snow showers forecast for tonight into Thursday morning, mainly before 1 a.m.

This morning, travel will likely be difficult for most locations north and along Interstate 70, according to the weather service.

Duane Davis, director of the Jackson County Emergency Management Agency, advises residents to minimize travel if possible and to not strain clearing driveways and vehicles, for this could cause stress on the body.

Davis also advises residents to take care of themselves and pets during this time. Staying inside is the best option while the snow patrols do the work making sure the roads are clear.

Driving in heavy, wet snow requires reduced speeds, increased following distance and making sure seat belts are buckled for the safety of the driver, passengers and others on the road.

Heavy snowfall rates are expected in two waves. The initial wave was expected to pass over south central Indiana late Tuesday night through daybreak today. The second wave will produce higher snowfall rates over north central Indiana this morning.

A high of 39 degrees is expected today with a low of 33 tonight into Thursday morning.

The weather service expects hazardous conditions could impact the morning and/or evening commute today.

Snow showers will likely linger through Thursday with a 50% chance. Warmer temperatures are on the way for Saturday and Sunday, likely melting the snow with a high of 44 degrees.
