Rita J. (Scifres) Riley, 87, passed away at her home at 5:25 AM on Friday, January 6th, 2023, in Crothersville, IN. Rita was born on Wednesday, May 15, 1935, in Jackson County, IN to James E. “Ed” & Eunice (Mosley) Scifres.

Rita was a 1953 Crothersville High School graduate. After high school, Rita attended and graduated from beauty school in Indianapolis, IN. On November 24, 1956, at the First Baptist Church of Crothersville, Rita married Barton Riley. Rita was a hairdresser for 20 years from 1955 until 1975. She worked with other hairdressers in the beginning and then owned and operated her own beauty shop, “Rita’s Beauty Shop.”

Rita was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crothersville where she enjoyed attending Sunday School and was in charge of preparing meals for numerous funeral dinners, other church fellowships, and gatherings. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #1083 Ladies Auxiliary in Crothersville. She loved working in her flowers she had grown, gardening, cooking, and canning.

Survivors include her loving husband of 66 years, Barton Riley of Crothersville, IN, her 3 children, Guy Lynn (Diane) Riley of Cooper City, FL, Alisa Kay (Ricci) Sweazy of Crothersville, IN, and Larry Joe Riley of Seymour, IN, 3 grandchildren, Brian Guy (Mayra) Riley of Houston, TX, Nicole Diane (Gabe) Riley-Guerrero of Cooper City, FL, and Patrick Dwight Barton (Adrian) Sweazy of Lexington, IN, 3 great grandchildren, Oliver Gabriel and Luka Maximus Guerrero, and Lainey Mae Sweazy, and 1 sister, Frances Colwell of Dayton, OH. Rita is having a new great grandson that is to be born any day now and the family is anxiously awaiting his arrival, Cole Alexander Guerrero.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James E. “Ed” and Eunice (Mosley) Scifres, brother, Harold “Bud” Scifres, sister, Joy Brumett, and grandson, Rick K. Sweazy.

Pastor Randy King will conduct funeral services on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Adams Family Funeral Homes & Crematory in Crothersville, IN. Family and friends may visit from 11:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 14, 2023, at Adams Family Funeral Homes & Crematory in Crothersville, IN.

Memorial donations may be given in honor of Rita to Crothersville Cemetery or First Baptist Church of Crothersville c/o Adams Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, 110 East Howard Street Crothersville, IN 47229.
