After a big week, Brownstown Central junior Jack Benter is one of six players to earn the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Franciscan Health Player of the Week honors.

On Tuesday morning, the IBCA released its players of the week after week five of basketball competition in the state. The girls teams are already one third of the way through their season while the boys teams are just starting to get into their groove.

The IBCA selects a player of the week every week, naming one from each of the IBCA’s three districts.

For Benter’s play last week, he was the recipient of this honor in District 3. The girls recipient in District 3 was Columbus East’s Saige Stahl.

In District 1, Penn’s Markus Burton won it for the boys and Crown Point’s Ava Ziolkowski won it for the girls. In District 2, West Lafayette’s Divine Adeyanju was the boys recipient and West Lafayette’s Adrianne Tolen was the girls recipient.

For Benter, he scored a total of 98 points across the Braves’ three games last week.

Last Tuesday, the junior scored 24 points in a 83-42 Mid-Southern Conference victory at Salem. He shot 11-0f-17 from the field, including two 3-pointers. He also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists and collected five steals.

He followed that up with his highest scoring total of the year up to that point last Friday night against cross-county rival Seymour. Benter scored 36 points on 12-of-21 shooting against the Owls in a 64-52 victory. He also hit two 3-pointers in the game and was 10-of-14 from the free-throw line. Benter also had six rebounds, five assists and three steals in the win.

It would’ve been Benter’s highest point total so far if he didn’t top it just 24 hours later. Last Saturday night, Benter dropped 38 points in a close 74-69 loss to Cincinnati Withrow. Benter went 11-of-15 from the charity stripe in that game, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out another five assists.

Benter and the Braves are 3-1 so far this season and will play at Scottsburg this Friday night.

This is the 15th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program, but just the third season it is being presented by Franciscan Health, a corporate sponsor of the IBCA.

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Girls State Finals. Boys winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Boys State Finals.
