BCMS sending 7 runners to state meet

Three girls and four boys will represent Brownstown Central Middle School in today’s Indiana Middle School Cross Country Championships.

The meet will be at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.

Running today will be Logan Chavarria, Eli Crockett, Dalton Mitchell, Bryce Garland, Annabelle Mathena, Naomi McKain and Eulah Beavers. Maddox Wallace also qualified for the meet but won’t be able to participate due to being out of state.

“Overall, our top five boys and the top three girls, they qualified in their very first meet, so it has just been a very phenomenal season,” Braves coach Dawn Drake said.

The Braves are coming off of a strong showing in the Mid-Southern Conference meet Sept. 22 in Pekin.

Two girls finished in the top 10. McKain placed sixth, and Mathena was ninth. The team placed sixth, and Drake said there were a few girls out due to injury.

For the boys, three wound up in the top 25. Mitchell led the way, placing 17th, followed by Chavarria in 20th and Garland in 21st. The Braves placed fourth and were missing one of the state competitors due to sickness, Drake said.

“It was a really good turnout for MSC, great times. It was a great day to run,” she said.

Earlier in the season, McKain won a race in North Vernon and placed third in another meet.

“We’ve really had a great team for a small size team,” Drake said. “They’ve been phenomenal. We’ve began running in July, so it paid off.”
