Two arrested in connection to fentanyl overdose death

Two Jackson County residents face preliminary Level 1 felony charges related to the death of a Bartholomew County man of an overdose in July, police report.

Tiffany Marie Sculley, 34, of Brownstown and Ryan Alex Self, 34, of Seymour each face a charge of dealing in a controlled substance resulting in death in connection with the death of Ronald L. Smith, 37, of Columbus, according to a news release from the Columbus Police Department.

Police found Smith dead in the 1200 block of Indianapolis Road in the city.

Toxicology tests showed he had died as a result of fentanyl intoxication, police report.

Through various investigative techniques, investigators were able to identify Self and Sculley as suspects in connection with Smith’s death, said Lt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the Columbus Police Department.

Self was arrested Thursday by Seymour police and booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown in connection with the investigation. He remained there Monday afternoon.

Sculley was arrested Monday and taken to the Bartholomew County Jail in Columbus.

A Level 1 felony is punishable by 20 to 40 years in prison with an advisory sentence of 30 years if convicted.

The charges in this case are a result of a collaborative investigative effort by the Columbus Police Department, Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department’s Joint Narcotic Enforcement Team, Columbus Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, Columbus Police Department Uniform Division, Seymour Police Department Criminal Investigations Division, Indiana State Police Cyber Crimes Division and Bartholomew County Prosecutor’s Office.
